Book Review: The Wish List Trip by Kerry Lonsdale And Orly Konig
Powerful Tale Of Friendship. Like so many romances, this is one of those tales where had the people involved simply took a step back and discussed the original events so much sooner than they eventually do, so much wasted time and energy could have been avoided.
But then, as with those romances, we wouldn't have more than a couple of pages of story here. ;)
Because these characters didn't do that, what we actually get is a richly layered story from one author I know to be a master storyteller - Lonsdale - and her best friend, Konig (who I've yet to read, but the people I do know who have read her books love them).
There is a lot to unpack between these three friends, all of whom are hiding various things from each other... one of them even from beyond her own grave. But Lonsdale and Konig keep the pacing tight enough to drive the plot while loose enough to allow key scenes to develop and breathe, and in doing so show just how great their storytelling abilities are.
There is a lot of drama here. For at least some readers, the room may get quite a bit dusty at times. But there's also some great comedy, sprinkled in just often enough to keep the tale from getting *too* heavy, even as its central theme is largely grief and healing.
For those of us in our 40s and beyond struggling to remain close to friends of old... this one is going to hit a lot harder than those in their 20s just starting out. Which is great in that this age of character hasn't always been featured as prominently as it is beginning to (outside of romantasy, at least), but also will hit perhaps a bit close to home for many of us "more advanced in years" (yes, even those of us barely at "mid life").
Truly an excellent story, one that clearly has Lonsdale's fingerprints without necessarily being a "Kerry Lonsdale Book" - which further speaks to the collaborative effort between the real life friends in shaping this tale of friendship and reconnection.
Very much recommended.
