Book Review: Four-Letter Nation by Steven H. Jaffe

Fucking Comprehensive Shit Lacking A Goddamned Bibliography. Ok, so the title of this review is quite intentional. If you can't handle that... this is *NOT* the book for you. While a claimed humorous look at the history of American profanity (that I never really noticed too much funny in, reading it more as a straight history really), there is exactly *one* profanity this book doesn't actually say, always writing as "N----". Pretty well literally anything else is fair fucking game, and Jaffe does a great job of tracing the relevant histories from the Colonial era all the way into the social media/ AI era.

Along the way, we're going to see that profanity has pretty well *always* been a part of the American lexicon - and that some of our greatest icons (Washington, Franklin, and Lincoln among them) were as profane as anything the President as I write this on October 11, 2026 has ever said. (And yes, he is also discussed, along with at least one predecessor from this Millennium.) Yes, the current one is more open about it... but there was a significant white washing during the Victorian era of just how profane earlier luminaries had been, according to Jaffe.

Along with the words and the histories of them (apparently "go fuck yourself" is a relatively recent development, first really coming into its own in the post-WWI era), we also get a solid discussion of the various societal and legal fights over what is permissible where and when, including discussions of both Carlin's "Seven Words" and the various debates over music and internet censorship and the (now) nearly ubiquitous content labels on many songs, shows, and movies.

No, the only really shitty thing noted about this book is its absolute dearth of any bibliography at all, clocking in at a measly five percent, when triple that is the bare minimum I expect based on now over 8 years of reading advance reader copies as 90% or more of my reading and including over 1500 books across nearly every imaginable genre - including hundreds of nonfiction books specifically.

So for those whose sensibilities can handle such open discussion of such fucktastic lowbrow language, I think you'll have a great time here. If you do decide to read it, please do leave your own review wherever you see this one. Even one so short as this sentence. Every review absolutely helps us readers - only with as many views as possible on a given thing can we really begin to know the actual shape of it, and only with such aggregated knowledge can we really then know what to make of the thing.

Very much recommended.
