A Bit Different For This Universe, Still Awesome. This book has *most* everything long time fans of this (Detective Casey White) universe have come to know and love - a compelling, grounded mystery, heart rending emotion, some *very* tense moments, etc - but also, for the first time in seemingly quite some time... Spangler pulls back a bit in at least one regard.
This is the first book in this series I can remember in quite some time, if ever (to be clear, I first started this series around Casey White number 4 or so), where there is *NOT* a truly psychotic, nearly Saw type villain with some inventive (and generally rather creepy) killing method.
Instead, this tale grounds itself in an unfortunately all too real world... if in a place one wouldn't normally expect to see these particular issues pop up.
The personal stakes are as high as ever though, and there is one scene deep in the book that was a pleasant enough surprise.
Also, I think Spangler may be writing his cat into these books now. Which is actually rather awesome.
With everything going on in this book, I don't think I'd *start* with this one - but you're going to want it when you get here. Instead, I think I'd start with at least Book 1 in this new spinoff series, as this book directly discusses the fallout from that one in several key points and in some ways said fallout directly drives a lot of the personal stakes here. But when you get here... you're in for yet another solid ride, and I'll be interested to see where Spangler takes this series and this universe next.
